Has Veliaj's arrest damaged the SP base in Tirana? Spiroapli 'leaves

Speaker of Parliament Elisa Spiropali, also the SP's political leader for Tirana, was asked in Opinion whether the arrest of Erion Veliaj has damaged the base in the capital ahead of the May 11 elections.

Spiropali stated that the Socialists have not publicly come out to defend him with the party's weapons, not saying a single word in his defense.

" This is a question to ask for electoral reasons, but I will start from the fact that we are terribly sorry for what has happened, in all respects, both from a human point of view, as colleagues, for a man we have worked with for years and as a man who has unquestionably made his merits in the Socialist Party, but also in the transformation of Tirana. But have all these reasons and our feelings served to make us go public and defend politically or with the weapons of the party, even Erion?

A man in such high positions in the Socialist Party and with such a high influence as you say? No, not in this case either. So in our case the choice was very clear.

"That EU Chapter 1 group was not opened just because one fine day it was suddenly given to them that we were at that table and negotiating the rule of law, for the rule of law, for freedoms, for the fight against corruption and organized crime. We have taken this power away from politics and returned it to the Albanian citizens," said Spiropali.
