Waltz to step down as Trump's national security adviser

Donald Trump's national security adviser, Mike Waltz, is leaving his role, Reuters reports.

Waltz was part of the American team that negotiated a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia as well as in the talks that led to a 30-day ceasefire proposal tabled in Saudi Arabia in March.

While the circumstances of his departure are unclear, Waltz said he accepted "full responsibility" for the Signalgate scandal.

This came after The Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg was added to a Signal conversation with senior Trump administration officials, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared details about US strikes in Yemen.

Skynews  correspondent James Matthews says Waltz "was clearly the sacrificial lamb" and adds that Donald Trump may have been "waiting for this moment".

He also points out that Waltz was on American television this morning, playing the role of national security adviser talking about Ukraine and saying it's time to bring Russia to the table.

"This happened just a few hours ago, so this news will have come as a surprise, presumably to him within the last two hours," Matthews adds.
