Stress at the office can be more dangerous than smoking!

A study conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Pfeffer (Stanford) and Dr. Joel Goh (Harvard), published in “Behavioral Science & Policy”, has shown that work-related stress can have serious impacts on the health and longevity of individuals. The researchers analyzed 228 studies and found that key stress factors – such as long work hours, lack of control over tasks and job insecurity – contribute to poor health.

The study found that job insecurity increases the likelihood of reporting health problems by 50%, high job demands increase the risk of illness by 35%, while long working hours are associated with a 20% increase in mortality. The authors point out that the effects of a toxic work environment can be as harmful as passive smoking, and sometimes even more dangerous than smoking itself.

The conclusion of the study is clear: improving working conditions and changing careers can be essential not only for mental health, but also for the long-term well-being and health of individuals.
