Britain in talks with France and Saudi Arabia on recognizing Palestinian state

The United Kingdom is holding talks with France and Saudi Arabia about the possibility of recognizing a Palestinian state, ahead of an international conference expected to be held in June, with the aim of keeping alive the prospect of a two-state solution in the Middle East. The news was confirmed by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy during a presentation to the House of Lords International Relations Committee.

This is the first time that London has publicly acknowledged that it is discussing with France a possible process for recognizing Palestine, as part of a joint diplomatic initiative with Riyadh and Paris.

Such recognition by two permanent members of the UN Security Council, such as Britain and France, would constitute a powerful political signal on the international stage. However, the process remains complex and sensitive, due to strong opposition from Israel and the lack of a clear consensus on how to implement such recognition.

“We want recognition of Palestine to have real impact on the ground, not just be a symbolic act,” Lammy said. He added that recognition of Palestine by some European countries in recent years has not produced the desired effect, calling it a sad reflection of political reality.

The conference planned for June is expected to be a key moment to revitalize diplomatic efforts towards a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with particular emphasis on implementing the two-state principle.
