EPP unanimously adopts Urgent Resolution: Elections and democracy in Albania are

The EPP has adopted a resolution in which they raise the alarm in strong language about electoral manipulation, state capture and the collapse of democratic standards in Albania under the government of Edi Rama — especially on the eve of the elections on May 11, 2025.

The resolution highlights as main concerns: vote buying through cash and cannabis revenues; Misuse of public resources and tenders during the pre-election period; Electoral hiring and favoritism of SP supporters; Illegal appointment of the interim mayor of Tirana after the arrest of Erion Veliaj; Oppression of the opposition and restriction of the media; Criminal prosecution and pressure on opposition leaders and candidates; Inequality in media access and concentration of media ownership in favor of the government; The ban on TikTok before the elections is a threat to freedom of expression and digital rights; Capture of justice and impunity; Institutions that are politically captured and do not guarantee independence; Electoral crimes remain unpunished, creating a culture of impunity; Suspected links between political actors and criminal networks, especially in the police and judiciary.

The resolution also calls on the EU, OSCE and Council of Europe to demand an end to vote buying and abuse of public funds; send additional observers to high-risk municipalities; publicly document and denounce electoral violations; and implement conditional mechanisms in the EU integration process if violations continue.
