Crime statistics 2024/ INSTAT: Suspected perpetrators increase by 1.4%, 21-29

Criminal offenses decreased in 2024, but the opposite happened with suspected perpetrators, who increased by 1.4%. The Institute of Statistics recently published crime and criminal justice statistics, highlighting that last year, a total of 32,653 criminal offenses were recorded, 3.5% less, compared to 2023.

"The number of suspected perpetrators of criminal offenses in 2024 reached 40,057, with an increase of 1.4%, compared to the previous year: 93.7% are men, while the most represented age group is 30-44 years old, 36.0%.  The number of non-recidivist perpetrators is 33,453, 0.1% less, compared to the previous year; In 2024, 17,761 injured persons were registered, 4.3% more, compared to 2023. 37.9% of them are injured for crimes against the person, while women make up 38.8% of this category, mainly in sexual crimes, crimes against children, marriage and family, as well as in crimes against morality and dignity," the publication states.

According to INSTAT, the number of criminal proceedings registered in 2024 is 24,912, with an increase of 3.4%. Of the 25,272 criminal proceedings concluded, 36.6% of them were dismissed, 26.8% were suspended and 36.6% were sent for trial in court.

"In 2024, 13,167 defendants were registered, 5.7% less, compared to the previous year. Men account for 94.6% of the total number of defendants, almost the same percentage over the last five years. The number of prisoners in institutions for the execution of criminal decisions is 4,491, 13.1% less, compared to 2023. Men account for 98.3% of the total number of prisoners, " the publication states.

From the analysis of the figures, it results that the criminal offenses: cybercrimes, stalking, intentional homicide, theft by abuse of office, domestic violence, laundering of proceeds of crime, sexual crimes, intentional crimes against health and violation of traffic rules have increased compared to last year, while the rest of the criminal offenses have decreased.

Perpetrators of criminal offenses

The number of perpetrators by criminal offense includes the number of suspects who may be present in more than one criminal offense and the perpetrator is counted in all offenses where he is a suspect. In 2024, 36.0% of perpetrators are in the 30-44 age group, 24.8% in the 18-29 age group and 22.8% belong to the 45-59 age group.

The number of defendants for the criminal offenses: illegal crossing of the state border, providing assistance for illegal crossing of the border, laundering of the proceeds of crime, intentional murder, intentional crimes against health, attempted murder, theft and weapons trafficking has decreased compared to last year, while for the rest of the offenses it has increased.

"In institutions for the execution of criminal decisions, the age group 21-29 has the highest number of prisoners. People under 20 and over 60 have the lowest number of prisoners," INSTAT estimates./ Monitor
