Governor Kamil: Israeli forces will demolish over 100 houses in the occupied

Israeli forces are preparing to demolish houses in two refugee camps in the north of the West Bank, which is occupied by Israel. So said the governor of one of the camps and the Associated Press, the news agency that has seen the Israeli military documents.

Abdallah Kamil, the governor of Tulkarem, wrote on Facebook on Thursday that the army was preparing to demolish 116 houses in the Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps, which are two of the main targets of Israeli raids in the north West Bank.

The Israeli military stated that it is implementing changes to the camps, "to improve movement for soldiers" and prevent militantism. The army said it has made efforts to reduce the number of houses that will be demolished as much as possible and called on citizens "to contact the authorities to consider the possibilities of taking their belongings from the houses".

Two orders to demolish the houses indicated that they would be demolished within 24 hours, according to military documents shared with the Associated Press by a UN official on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

The news caused residents of the already evacuated Nur Shams and Tulkarem camps to rush back and retrieve their belongings before their homes were destroyed. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNREA, said there were reports that Israeli forces were arresting and firing weapons as a warning to Palestinians during that time.

The Israeli army has been conducting an operation in the West Bank over the past several months, which at its peak displaced approximately 40,000 Palestinians. The operation has emptied and massively destroyed several refugee camps in the north of the West Bank, such as Tulkarem and Nur Shams, where descendants of Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes in previous wars lived.

This is the largest displacement in the West Bank since Israel's seizure of territory in the Middle East war in 1967. Israel has stated that the troops will stay in several camps for a year. Israel occupied the West Bank, along with Gaza and East Jerusalem during the Middle East War in 1967.

The Palestinians want these three territories to be part of their state in the future. Three million Palestinians in the West Bank live under Israeli military rule, while the Western-backed Palestinian Authority has limited control over populated centers.

More than 500,000 Jewish settlers, living in settlements built throughout the territory which are considered illegal by the majority of the international community, have Israeli citizenship./ REL
