Serbian President Cuts Off Visit to US, Vucic Reportedly Ill

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has cut short his visit to the United States after falling ill, Serbian media reported. According to Serbian public broadcaster RTS, after being checked by doctors, Vučić has decided to return to Serbia.

During his stay in the US, Vučić met with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He was scheduled to meet with several senior Republican Party officials before cutting short his visit to the US.

The US President's envoy for Special Missions, Richard Grenell, wished Vučić a speedy recovery after the Serbian leader abruptly cut short his visit. In a post on X, Grenell also expressed regret that he was unable to meet with the Serbian leader.

According to the Tanjug news agency, Vučić fell ill while preparing for meetings with US congressmen. Vučić's office said it would provide information to the public in the coming days about the Serbian leader's health problems.

Vučić's visit to the US came days before he is due to attend Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9. His visit to Russia has been criticised by the European Union. Serbia, which has good relations with Russia, has so far not imposed sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. The European Union has repeatedly called on Serbia, a country seeking to join the bloc, to align its foreign policy with that of Brussels./ REL
