World on alert from 'Omicron', Britain calls urgent G7 meeting

The appearance of the new variant of Covid-19 'Omicron', has alarmed almost all countries of the world. While cases have been identified in Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark and Australia, most have imposed restrictions on travel from Africa.

According to Reuters , in the context of a global alarm, Great Britain has requested today the urgent meeting of the G7 Health Ministers, to discuss the latest developments with the pandemic.

Following Omicron's report, the World Health Organization stated that there is still no evidence to prove that the new variant, first discovered in South Africa, is more contagious than others or causes more serious illness.

"Preliminary data suggest that there is an increasing rate of hospitalization in South Africa, but this may be due to an increase in the total number of people being infected, and not as a result of a specific infection, " the WHO said.

The Omicron discovery sparked global alarm as governments around the world tried to impose new travel restrictions and sold financial markets, fearing the variant might resist vaccinations and disrupt a nascent economic reopening after a two-year global pandemic.
