Eva Kaili, the EU vice-president and Greek MEP, has been arrested by Belgian police, along with four other suspects, as part of an anti-corruption investigation with suspected links to Qatar.

Belgium's federal prosecutor announced the earlier arrests after 600,000 euros were discovered when police raided 16 addresses in the capital Brussels.

Prosecutors did not specify the identities of the suspects or name the country involved.

But a source close to the case confirmed it had focused on Qatar's alleged efforts to bribe an Italian socialist, who was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2019.
