The tourist boat overturned in the Italian lake, three people lost their lives

A tourist boat capsized off the coast of Italy, where a powerful storm caused the capsize. Nineteen people arrived safely after the disaster, but divers and helicopters continue to search Lake Maggiore for one person still missing.

Italian firefighters say they have pulled three bodies from a lake in northern Italy after a tourist boat capsized in a sudden and violent storm.

Divers supported by a helicopter continued to search Lake Maggiore, in the Lombardy region, on Monday for one person still missing after a whirlwind overturned a boat carrying more than 20 tourists and crew late Sunday.

Firefighters said 19 people were rescued. Many were said to have managed to swim to shore, or were picked up by other boats after the vessel capsized outside Lisanza, at the southern end of the lake.

The president of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, said the "very serious incident" was "caused by a tornado".

The boat was 16 meters (52 feet) long and had been hired by tourists, he said on Facebook. The ship was carrying 25 people, including 23 tourists and two crew members, Italy's Varese News said.

A video of firefighters published by Corriere della Sera showed the helicopter flying over choppy waters, where chairs and other debris could be seen floating.

The storm was part of a storm system that hit the Lombardy region on Sunday evening, forcing delays at Malpensa airport.

Lake Maggiore, which lies on the southern side of the Alps, is the second largest lake in Italy and a popular tourist destination.
