Putin vows "revenge" against those who try to "divide"

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he will take revenge on anyone who tries to divide Russian society, as he praised the efficiency and loyalty of his country's law enforcement agencies.

Putin has escalated his crackdown on civil society, independent media and the opposition as he continues his military offensive in Ukraine. Opponents and critics of the Kremlin are prosecuted and sentenced to long prison terms.

"Those who try to scare people, divide our society, play with religious or national sentiments will never succeed," Putin said in a video message released by the Kremlin on July 25.

"An inevitable revenge awaits them", he added.

Russia regularly uses terms such as "Western spies" and "Western puppets" to describe those who oppose the Kremlin, including critics at home.

The Kremlin released this video of Putin to mark "Investigators' Day," and the Russian leader honored various law enforcement agencies, including the Investigative Committee and the security service, the FSB, which is the successor to the Soviet-era KGB.

"The investigators show unconditional loyalty to the Motherland and our people," Putin said.

Kremlin critics say Russia's focus on investigating and prosecuting political opponents at home leaves the state vulnerable to real security threats.

Almost all of Putin's main opponents are in prison or have gone into exile.

To suppress criticism, Russia applies harsh penalties to those who criticize military actions in Ukraine, while Putin has repeatedly claimed that Russian society is united regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022./rel
