Summer drowning risk: How to enjoy the water without risking your life

Being near water during the summer is one of the greatest pleasures for adults and children, but unfortunately, it often brings with it great dangers, the most important of which is drowning.

Drowning is the third leading cause of injury-related death globally, particularly in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, more than 236,000 people die from drowning each year, and the real number is believed to be much higher.

Children are most at risk, especially those under the age of 5, while men are more predisposed to this risk due to risky behaviors and greater exposure to water. People who live or work near water sources, including fishermen, are also at increased risk. Among the main factors that influence the increased risk are lack of supervision, use of alcohol or narcotic substances, diseases such as epilepsy, as well as limited knowledge about local risks.

To prevent drowning, experts advise a series of simple but effective measures: installing protective barriers around water sources, teaching children basic swimming and water safety, using lifesaving equipment, and avoiding alcohol consumption before swimming or boating. Flood management planning and national water safety strategies are also essential to protecting communities.

Experts emphasize that drowning often happens silently – without screaming, without splashing – so attention and vigilance are vital. Particular care should be taken in open water, where strong currents and natural hazards can be deadly. Learn to recognize danger signals and don't rely solely on your own instincts.

A saved life is worth more than any moment of carelessness. Enjoy the coolness of the water during the summer, but remember: safety is always a priority!
