British intelligence chief calls on Russians for cooperation

The head of Britain's spy service, MI6, on Wednesday called on Russians who oppose the war in Ukraine to "join hands" with his intelligence service and end the bloodshed.

In his second speech since becoming head of the Secret Intelligence Service in 2020, Richard Moore expressed his belief that there was very little chance of Russia regaining the upper hand in Ukraine.

During this speech, delivered at the British embassy in Prague, he compared the current situation in Ukraine to the Prague Spring in 1968, when the Soviet Union reversed liberal reforms.

"As they show us the corruption, infighting and callous incompetence of their leaders — the ugliest image of humanity — many Russians are struggling with the same dilemmas as their predecessors in 1968," Moore said.

"I invite them to do what others have done over the past 18 months and join hands with us. Our door is always open...Their secrets will be safe with us and together we will work to to end the bloodshed," he added.

He described Iran's decision to supply Moscow with drones as "unconscionable" and said the decision had provoked internal strife at the highest level of the regime in Tehran.

Moore also warned that China and Russia are racing to master artificial intelligence technologies.

He touched on the subject of artificial intelligence, saying that this technology helps intelligence agencies but cannot replace agents who can uncover secrets, something he said technology cannot do.

"The special characteristics of agents who are in the right places will become even more important," he said./rel
