Most of the countries of Northwestern Europe were hit by Hurricane Eunice on Sunday. The storm initially engulfed the British Isles causing extensive damage and several casualties.

Euronews reports that at least 16 victims have been recorded in Europe in just 24 hours: four in the Netherlands, four in Poland, three in England, two in Germany, two in Belgium and one in Ireland. Many of them are caused by falling trees on vehicles.

After hitting Ireland, the storm moved to the United Kingdom, to be followed by Northern France, the Benelux countries, and Germany and Denmark.

The storm hit much of northern Germany, where a state of red alert was declared. More than 1,000 kilometers of railways were damaged.

In the Hague, the Netherlands, dozens of homes were evacuated for fear that a church bell tower might collapse. The Dutch railway network was cut off and Thalys Amsterdam-Brussels connections as well.

In Belgium, most lines were up and running on Saturday after major overnight repair work.

In the north of France, about thirty injuries were recorded, in road accidents related to wind, falls or due to falling materials. About 37,000 homes were left without power Saturday morning and several regional rail links were cut off.
