Tensions in the north, the Escobar-Lajçak duo come to Belgrade and

The American envoy, Gabriel Escobar, and the European one, Miroslav Lajçak, will stay on Monday in Belgrade and on Tuesday in Pristina in order to encourage the parties to end the tensions in the north of Kosovo.

The West has followed the calls for Kosovo and Serbia to stop the violence in the north and return to dialogue, in order to calm the situation in the four municipalities: Mitrovica, Leposavić, Zubin Potok and Zveçan.

The Serbs have been protesting for a week demanding the removal of the newly elected mayors in the four municipalities with a Serbian majority.

Local Serbs also demand the removal of Kosovo Police units from the municipalities. KFOR forces continue to be present to guarantee order and security.

The US and the EU ask Kosovo to remove special police units from municipal buildings, the temporary relocation of new mayors to other alternative offices and the organization of new elections as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Serbia is required to withdraw the Serbian armed forces stationed near the border with Kosovo and reduce the state of readiness, maintain the peace of the protesters in the north and ensure the participation of Kosovo Serbs in new elections.
