Video/ Cargo ship crashes and collapses bridge in Baltimore, dozens of vehicles

Part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has collapsed after a freighter crashed into it early Tuesday. Many vehicles ended up in the water.

The incident happened around 1:30 am, when the ship, after colliding with the bridge, caught fire before sinking. A video posted on X appeared to show most of the 2.6km-long bridge as a number of vehicles plunged into the water below.

“All lanes closed in both directions for the incident on the I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured,” the Maryland Transportation Authority posted on X.

Matthew West, a Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class in Baltimore, told the New York Times that the Coast Guard received a report of an impact at 1:27 a.m. ET. West said the Dali, a 948ft (29m) Singapore-flagged freighter, had struck the bridge, which is part of Interstate 695.

The Dali had left Baltimore at 1 a.m. and was heading to Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, according to marine data platform MarineTraffic.
