Rama's rhetoric without standards, comparing Paris, London, New York with

Prime Minister Edi Rama recently compared the Lungomare in Vlora to cities like Paris, London, and New York, saying that there is no problem with the chairs and sidewalk service, but the time has come to free the sidewalks from barricades.

But these comparisons by the prime minister seem more like fancy words for 'likes' on social media than a reflection of reality.

In the cities the Prime Minister mentions, public space is not changed with a single decision or a Facebook post. There, any intervention on a sidewalk or square must go through public discussions, consultations with citizens, and clear rules that apply to everyone.

In Albania, the opposite happens, as decisions are made from above and often without asking anyone.

"No problem with chairs and service on a part of the sidewalk, like in Paris, London or New York, but without forgetting that the sidewalk belongs to the people and not to the barricades, like in Lungomare! Time to free the sidewalks from the barricades and to raise both the service and the appearance to a new level, worthy of Tourist Albania. Lungomare is the model of the waterfront of a coastal tourist city, now it should and will be a model of the external design of a service line. Therefore, the owners and managers of the service line should remove all the barricades themselves and cooperate with the municipality of Vlora and the Territorial Development Agency for the new design, for which we will gladly support them," Rama writes.
