Six days after active flames and toxic smoke, the fire at the Elbasan landfill is nearing extinction.

The Municipality of Elbasan announces that 95% of the fire has been extinguished, while the remainder consists mainly of vapors and gases remaining from the burned materials and the water used for extinguishing.

"It is the sixth day of the fight that we are fighting together, together with the Elbasan firefighters, the national firefighters, the civil emergencies, the army forces, as well as the private companies operating in Elbasan, which have lent a good hand in extinguishing the fire, " Elbasan Mayor Gledian Llatja declared to the media.

He further added that a great deal of work has been done and the initial source is now isolated: "We think we have it under control. It is still the initial source, which, as can be seen behind us, continues and melts. I believe it will continue for another two days, but everything is isolated. There is only gas and steam, due to the excess water that has been dumped into the landfill."

Llatja also thanked all the structures for their commitment and continuous efforts.

" I want to thank the firefighters, the defense forces, the army, all those who have contributed to bringing the situation in the Elbasan landfill under control. We have made maximum efforts. The entire civil emergency staff has been here from the first moment and to this day we are available without schedules, in cooperation with the ASHP, the public enterprise of the Municipality of Elbasan, but also with firefighters from other regions of Fier, Berat, Kamëz, Tirana, who have been made available to us by the General Directorate of Firefighters."

Speaking about the current situation on the ground, the mayor announced that there are no new outbreaks or the spread of existing outbreaks. He emphasized that the works to encapsulate waste exposed to natural agents will continue until the risk is completely eliminated.

In the end, Llatja also made a public appeal and an apology to the citizens.

"We want to appeal to all citizens, not only of Elbasan but of all of Albania, fires usually come either from carelessness or from deliberate arson. Even a small fire for agricultural needs can bring about a catastrophe. In the meantime, I want to apologize for the pollution and smoke that has spread in recent days. We have been on the ground without stopping and will remain here until the operation is fully completed ."
