Paris 2024/ The Belarusian athlete becomes the first to win gold medals as a neutral
Ivan Litvinovich of Belarus has become the first athlete to win a gold medal at the Paris Olympics competing as a neutral.
Litvinovich won gold in the men's springboard final on 2 August.
The 23-year-old athlete, who was also crowned champion at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, finished more than a full point ahead of his nearest rival, China's Wang Zisani, who won the silver medal.
Another Chinese trampolinist, Yan Langyu, won the bronze medal.
After initially excluding Russian and Belarusian athletes in the wake of Moscow's February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) changed its rules and allowed them to participate under a neutral flag and under strict conditions.
According to the regulation, athletes from these two countries cannot participate in team competitions, but only individually as neutrals. /rel
