Extreme heat wave, temperatures above 40°C next week

The Balkans are preparing for an extreme heat wave, which has caused alarm in countries in the region, while health authorities have urged citizens to stay in cool environments and consume as much fluids as possible to avoid dehydration.

Meteorologists in Serbia said on Thursday that the country had its hottest day since records began in the 19th century, predicting even higher temperatures in the coming days. Authorities have recommended that citizens stay in shaded areas or in air-conditioned rooms, avoid sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., and have warned of the risk that a prolonged drought could pose to crops.

According to forecasts, temperatures across the Balkans are expected to reach up to 40°C next week.

In Montenegro, many tourists have left the scorching Adriatic coast in the south and headed for the cooler mountainous area of Durmitor in the north, where temperatures at around 1,500 meters above sea level are significantly lower.

In Croatia, which has been facing fires along the Adriatic coast in recent days, many citizens have headed to Lake Bundek, near the capital Zagreb, to cool off.

Meanwhile, in North Macedonia, citizens are also seeking shelter from the heat in the areas around Lake Ohrid.
