26 years since NATO's intervention in Kosovo, Osmani: Freedom took wings

Today, 26 years ago, NATO airstrikes began against military-police targets in Serbia and Montenegro.

On March 24, the order to begin the bombing campaign was given by the President of the United States of America, Bill Clinton. That night, he delivered a historic speech to the American people, announcing that he had ordered the Atlantic Alliance to begin the military operation as the only possibility of ending the fighting in Kosovo.

" We and the NATO Alliance have made every effort to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Kosovo. But President Milosevic, who in the recent past caused terrible wars in Croatia and Bosnia, has decided in favor of aggression rather than peace ," Clinton said.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani wrote on social media that March 24 is the day when freedom took wings.

"The day when NATO allies stood up against evil, to protect a people who were fighting for existence, endangered by the genocidal regime of Serbia. It was the day when the light of hope triumphed over darkness," Osmani wrote.

She remembered the sacrifices and the liberation war, from which free Kosovo was born.

"From the flame of sacrifice and the liberation war, free Kosovo was born! 26 years later, Kosovo walks proudly, sovereign and unwaveringly towards a brighter future," said Osmani.

Air strikes against Serbian and Montenegrin forces continued until June 9, when the Kumanovo Agreement was reached, otherwise known as the capitulation of the criminal Milosevic, and on June 11, enemy forces began to leave the territory of Kosovo.

This is NATO's first military intervention since its formation, which is also known as the historic intervention.
