The last obstacle that Luiza Gega could not overcome

Three years ago, the Albanian athlete Luzia Gega was champion of the Balkans for the sixth time in a row. But her fame was not what it is today and few people remembered to post a status about her on social networks. The reception at Rinas airport by the government entourage and the laying of the red carpet for the champion could be, perhaps, only in her imagination.

Luzia Gega's investments and sacrifices to raise the red and black flag victoriously did not receive anything in return from the Albanian state. The biggest challenge for the champion was the tough conditions in which she trained since our country does not have a running track and in sports, infrastructure is the basic thing.

Not having a running track forced Gega to go and return from Elbasan every day. In addition to the Balkan championships, Luiza Gega has given Albania the Mediterranean championship, a prestigious competition in the sport of athletics. However, nothing changed for Luiza, neither the training conditions nor her financial situation; it is worth noting that she still lives in a rented house.

But this was not enough to crush the spirit of the champion. Three days ago, she triumphed in the European championship, grabbing the trophy in the 3,000-meter steeplechase race. In addition to the first place, Luiza Gega set her personal record in this discipline.

Except for this time the state did not remain passive. Louise had won a trophy that they couldn't help but make their own. The reception at the airport, the cabriolet rides ala Jackie Kennedy and the turn from the prime minister to the mayor of Tirana as to who will wave this trophy the most offered us a pathetic circus to the brim. More than an honest and worthy assessment for a champion, whose only passion had kept her from changing flags, this was a kidnapping, a hostage-taking of a victory in which they have no merit.

We remind you that Ilir Sulit, world runner-up in weightlifting, bronze medalist at the European Championships in 2000, and participant in two Olympics, in 1996 and 2000, in which he was ranked 14th and 5th respectively you. But not much time would pass and Suli and his trophies would be left in oblivion, refusing him even a job. A year ago, his statement attracted the public's attention: in the center of Tirana, he called for everyone to flee Albania.

Luiza Gega managed to overcome all the obstacles in the three thousand-meter race. She had even passed the obstacle of not breaking the state to provide her with the minimum conditions to reach this trophy. But she couldn't get past the embarrassing hostage-taking, a sport in which this mocking power is a world champion.
