Aleksandër Vucic resigns from the Serbian Progressive Party

After massive anti-government protests, the Serbian government organized a support rally in Belgrade. There, President Vucic announced to his followers his resignation as head of the SNS party.

"This is the last evening that I am speaking to you as the head of the SNS" , said Aleksandar Vucic during the mass gathering of the nationalist SNS party in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. At the congress of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) that took place this Saturday (27.05), the Minister of Defense Milosh Vučevic was elected as the successor of Vucic.

The Serbian president has held various leadership positions since 2012 and has determined the destinies of the country. Critics accuse him of an authoritarian style of government. His resignation from the leadership of the SNS will have few consequences. Vucic and his supporters control most of the media, the judiciary and part of the economy.

Since Friday morning, people from all over the country arrived in Belgrade by bus and train. According to human rights groups and the media, some of the participants were asked to participate.

The rally, under the motto "Serbia Hopes", was the government's response to the opposition-led demonstrations that took place in recent weeks, in which tens of thousands of people took part to protest against gun violence. Serbia was shocked by two rampant murders in which 18 people died. Opponents of Vučić demand an end to the glorification of violence in the pro-government media and the resignation of the interior minister and the head of the secret service./ DW
