Albanian political party could press charges against Serbian minister over usage

National Council of Albanians (NSA) was considering pressing charges against Vulin over frequent usage of the abusive term Shiptars, chairman of this council Ragmi Mustafa said for Radio Free Europe.

“This is an insulting language of the 1990s. Albanians should not be labeled like this. That language used by Vulin told us that we were not a part of this society”, Mustafa said.

RFE reiterated that Djuric used the same term in the middle of April.

If they should decide to press charges, NSA would have a legal foundation for it, because, in December 2018, the Appeals Court confirmed that first-degree sentence of High Court in Belgrade according to which the usage of Shiptar term was labeled as hate speech.

“The term ‘Shiptar’ is considered politically incorrect and insulting content in the Serbian language for the members of Albanian nationality living in Kosovo. Also, calling a Serb ‘Shiptar’, according to the court, was the same as labeling someone who was fighting against the national interests”, the explanation of the sentence stated.
