Albanian President: By Leaving Parliament, DP And SMI Left Me Alone To Face Up

President of the Republic Ilir Meta defended in a TV interview last evening his interpretation of the Constitution by decreeing legal expert Marsida Xhaferllari as Constitutional Court judge, considering it as a closed story since she had been sworn into office already. Dispelling the concerns shared by Justice Appointment Council Chair Ardian Dvorani about his unethical language and behavior in regards to him, Meta said that Dvorani needed medical assistance, as he was more concerned about the above than about joining a mafia-like plot to deprive the President of his right to appoint a Constitutional Court judge.

Asked about the internationals’ stance on the filling of vacancies in the Constitutional Court, Meta said he cared only for the serious and dignified international officials, such as Dame Audrey Glover, having no respect for those others who only thought about their pockets. He said that he would defend the Albanian people’s interests to every end by being the President of the Albanian people, not the President of the Socialist Party, the Democratic Party (DP), or the Socialist Movement for Integration.

At this point, he was highly critical of the DP and the SMI, accusing them of having left him at the mercy of a gang by leaving the Parliament. Their parliamentary boycott, according to Meta, has helped the ruling majority consolidate the state capture. Asked whether he intended to dissolve the Parliament, Meta said that the Assembly had been self-dissolved after incorporating the new opposition MPs.

According to him, the new MPs had never dreamed of joining the Parliament, and they did not deserve even entering the Parliament hall as visitors. Asked what he thought of the Constitutional Court if they would consider as legitimate the 30 June elections, Meta said that this would signify the collapse of the said court, and that, if this happened, Albania would need decades to launch the membership talks with the European Union. Meta confirmed he supported the need for the electoral system to be changed and stood by his idea that the President of Republic should be elected by people’s vote. Finally, he said that the present crisis in the country could not be solved through early general elections only.
