The decision of 17-year-old Serbian descent football player Ilija Ivic, who agreed to play for the Kosovo national under-19 football team, after signing a professional contract with Albanian football club Flamurtari, cause shocking reactions in the pro-regime media in Serbia.

Ivic has been called a traitor, degenerate, sold soul, and such comments were spearheaded by the pro-regime tabloids Srpski Telegraf, Alo and Informer.

It was reported on Saturday that because of Ivic’s decision his parents were fired from jobs in Serbian local authorities (his mother works for a municipality, his father – at a school), but this information was quickly rebutted.

If he plays for the Kosovo national team, Ivic will be the first Serb to take that step.
