Dacic Denies that Serbia Suspended Kosovo Derecognition Campaign

Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic denied claims of foreign media that Serbia is prepared to suspend the campaign for the derecognition of Kosovo’s independence as a gesture of goodwill for the forthcoming dialogue, but the statement of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on this topic, only hours after that, allowed to the contrary, although Vucic conditioned it with Pristina’s giving up on its campaign of admission into international institutions.

According to Radio Free Europe (RFE), quoting its own diplomatic sources in the European Union, Serbia has accepted to suspend its diplomatic campaign aimed a decreasing the number countries that recognize Kosovo’s independence, in order to contribute to a positive atmosphere for the new beginning of a dialogue on normalization of relations with Pristina.

RFE claims that this source described this campaign as “irritating” and that Belgrade accepted to discontinue its campaign in order to gain momentum for the dialogue.

The derecognition campaign started three years ago and Belgrade claims that a total of 18 countries have so far withdrawn recognition.

Although the campaign initially caused sneer because of the size and importance of certain countries that withdrew recognition, Kosovo and the part of the international community that supports Pristina’s stance increasingly view this as a problem and frown at these diplomatic actions of Belgrade.
