Deutsche Welle: Germany may add two more conditions to approve membership talks

Germany’s ruling party CDU/CSU is expected to determine during September its position in regards to the launching of European Union membership negotiations with Albania, Deutsche Welle reports, adding that Prime Minister Edi Rama is expected to be present during consultations to be held in Berlin this week.

As per Deutsche Welle’s report, the majority of CDU/CSU tends to give Albania a positive evaluation, with conditions, although a strong minority still thinks Albania is not ready for this step. Besides previous conditions like further progress in the justice system reform and the fight against corruption, organized crime and drugs, and the electoral reform, new conditions may be added.

They may include a clarification of the lawfulness of the 30 June local elections and information into the prosecutors’ investigations into the vote-bargaining affairs marring the 2016 Dibra Mayoral by-election and the 2017 general elections. The CDU/CSU Group at the German Bundestag is expected to reach a decision into this matter on 24 September 2019, Deutsche Welle reported.
