Trump-Putin talk marks turning point in Ukraine war, peace negotiations open

A phone call between former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was enough to trigger the start of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Professor of International Law and Foreign Policy, Angelos Syrigos, analyzed on CNN Greece the challenges Kiev faces in these talks and the risks the European Union could face.

Ukraine in a difficult position
Kiev is facing a complicated situation, especially after the statement of the US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, who made it clear that Ukraine's accession to NATO is impossible and the return of the occupied territories remains a major challenge. At the same time, Syrigos emphasizes that Ukraine is retreating on several fronts, losing ground and military resources.

Europe as an observer
Despite the support the EU has given Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Europe is currently playing a passive role in the negotiations. The European Commission and the G7 have imposed tough sanctions on Russia, but experts estimate that a peace agreement would lead to their gradual lifting.

Three-phase peace plan
According to CNN Greece, a plan to end the war is being considered and is based on a model similar to the Israel-Hamas agreement. The plan includes:

Phase One: Six-week ceasefire, with the withdrawal of Russian forces in the Donetsk region and gradual easing of sanctions on Moscow.
Phase Two: Negotiations on the territories occupied by Russia and a permanent ceasefire.
Phase Three: Beginning of the reconstruction of Ukraine with the help of the US and the EU.

This development is expected to significantly impact the dynamics of the conflict and determine the future of international relations in the region.
