Britain agrees to restore trade and defense ties with the EU

Britain agreed on Monday the most significant reset of trade and defense ties with the European Union since Brexit, after US President Donald Trump's upheaval of the global order forced both sides to walk away from their bitter divorce.

Nearly nine years after voting to leave the bloc, Britain, a major defense player, will participate in joint procurement projects. The sides also agreed to make it easier for UK food and visitors to reach the EU and signed a controversial new fisheries deal.

Trump's tariffs, along with warnings that Europe must do more to protect itself, have forced governments around the world to reexamine trade, defense and security ties, bringing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer closer to France's Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders.

The government said restoring relations with its largest trading partner would cut red tape for food and farming producers, making food cheaper, improving energy security and adding almost £9 billion to the economy.
