The population of Albania in the first three months of 2025 has recorded a negative natural increase, because the number of deaths is greater than births. According to INSTAT, the number of births in the first quarter of this year has decreased by over 14%.

According to sociologist Gëzim Tushi, the decline in fertility has several factors, including social and economic ones.

"Women's emancipation is undoubtedly another very important element today. Today's women live in this capitalist reality. They also have their own career goals, success, and money. So, apparently, fertility is no longer the main ideal of the Albanian family. This shows that the family is becoming modern, nuclear. Today, the demands are very high. Raising a child is extremely expensive,"  said sociologist Gëzim Tushi.

Another important cause of the decline in fertility is emigration.

"Emigration is very important in the decline in the birth rate because in general those who leave Albania are the reproducers, they are those who are sexually capable of reproducing. So their departure means that those children who should have been born here are born abroad. And they are nationalized, acclimatized, become French, German, English and we don't have them here,"  said Tushi.

According to him, abolishing the bonus and introducing a monthly payment for children, as promised during the electoral campaign, is a positive measure.

"A national strategy is needed to determine what the factors are... by making a complete diagnosis of the causes, economic, social, psychological, cultural. Then intervene with certain measures, as was said during the campaign. The idea of ​​the old bonus, 400 thousand, 800 thousand, 1 million and 200 thousand old Lekë, will be replaced with monetarist policies, with a reward for the children they will bring into life. I think it is a measure",  said Tushi.

INSTAT reports that all regions recorded a population decline, compared to the same period in 2024. In the first quarter of 2025, the natural increase was -883 people./ Klan News
