Appeal to the Supreme Court / Veliaj requests the change of the "prison arrest" measure

Appeal to the Supreme Court / Veliaj requests the change of the "prison

The suspended mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has filed a recourse with the High Court, requesting the change of the security measure "prison arrest" that was imposed on him by the Special Court of Appeal. It is learned that the request was submitted via mail by his defense lawyers.

Veliaj has been in prison since February 10, when he was arrested at the Tirana City Hall office as a suspect in several serious criminal offenses. He is accused of “passive corruption of high-ranking state officials or local elected officials,” committed in collaboration in nine cases, as well as “laundering the proceeds of a criminal offense or criminal activity.”

The SPAK file states that Veliaj, together with his wife Ajola Xoxa – who is under the “compulsory appearance” measure – created and put into operation a scheme for illegal benefits from public funds of the Municipality of Tirana. According to the Special Prosecution, the scheme aimed to personally enrich Veliaj and his family, through camouflaged and illegal actions.

The High Court is expected to review the request in the future, while Veliaj continues to maintain the status of the person arrested under investigation in one of the most sensational cases involving senior local government officials.
