Diplomats: EU and Britain have agreed to "restart" relations

European Union and United Kingdom negotiators have reached an agreement to "restart" their relations after Brexit, diplomats said on Monday, as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer prepares to host the bloc's leaders at a summit in London on May 19.

EU diplomats said member states had given the green light to a trio of texts expected to be signed at the summit: a Security and Defence Partnership, an EU-UK solidarity declaration, and a Mutual Understanding on issues ranging from trade and fisheries to the movement of young people, the French news agency AFP reports.

Talks are said to have lasted until Sunday night to resolve several key points, with the sensitive issue of fishing rights at the top of the list.

Under the final deal, Britain will keep its waters open to European fishermen for 12 years, after the current agreement expires in 2026, in exchange for an indefinite easing of the bloc's rules on food imports from the United Kingdom.

On the issue of youth movement – another key source of friction, as London fears such a scheme could lead to a rollback of freedom of movement between the EU and Britain – negotiators are reported to have broadly agreed on the main points.

Britain left the European Union on February 1, 2020, following a referendum held in 2016, where 51.89 percent of participants chose the so-called Brexit - leaving the European bloc./ REL
