Mexican navy ship crashes into Brooklyn Bridge in New York, 2 dead, 17 injured

A Mexican navy ship has crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, killing two crew members and injuring at least 17 others.

The Mexican Navy said in a post on X that the Cuauhtemoc, an academy training ship with 277 people on board, collided.

She clipped the top of her masts and moved toward the Brooklyn side of the East River, as passersby left the shore.

Naval cadets dressed in white uniforms could be seen hanging from the ship's transoms after the collision.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said two people had died and 17 others were injured, including two who were in critical condition.

According to Skynews , the 45-meter-long masts were too tall to cross the arched bridge and capsized when the ship, named after the last Aztec emperor, sailed backwards underneath it.

It was not clear what caused the ship to veer off course. New York Police Chief Wilson Aramboles said the ship had just left a Manhattan pier and was believed to be heading out to sea, not toward the bridge.

He said an initial report suggested the ship lost power due to a mechanical problem.
