EU concerned about recent operations in northern Kosovo

The European Union has reacted after the recent operations of Kosovo authorities in Serb-majority municipalities in the north of the country, describing them as actions that risk increasing interethnic tensions and damaging Kosovo's international position.

In an official EU statement, Brussels expresses particular concern about the inspections and closures of public utilities, including companies that provide drinking water and basic services to local communities.

In recent days, Kosovo authorities have taken control of several facilities that were used within the framework of the Serbian system. They have taken control of a building used by the National Employment Service, the premises of the Public Municipal Enterprise "Ibër Water Supply", a sports gym, the city museum and several other institutions.

"Recent police operations, inspections and closures in Kosovo risk exacerbating tensions and negatively impacting the daily lives of local communities, as well as undermining Kosovo's international image ," the response states, which specifically mentions concern about the operations against the "Ibar Waterworks" in North Mitrovica and the closure of the factory in Zubin-Potok.

"Unilateral and uncoordinated actions undermine efforts to build trust between communities. We call on outgoing Prime Minister Kurti and the authorities in Kosovo to stop these closures, show restraint and avoid escalating measures," the response further states.
