Trump: Nothing will happen in Ukraine without a meeting between me and Putin

US President Donald Trump said he plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin “as soon as we can arrange a meeting.” The statement came on Friday, just before talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Turkey began — the first face-to-face meeting since the early weeks of the war.

Trump expressed skepticism about any progress in the talks and stressed that a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine would not happen without his direct involvement. “Nothing will happen in Ukraine until Putin and I meet,” he said, adding that “it’s time to just do it.”

He claimed that his presence is crucial to the engagement of other leaders. “Putin didn’t go because he knew I wouldn’t be there, and Zelensky didn’t show up because he heard Putin wasn’t going,” Trump said, implying that the leaders’ absence from the talks was related to his presence or absence.

Trump has repeatedly called for Russia and Ukraine to engage in peace talks and has mentioned the possibility of him taking part himself. However, Putin's absence from the latest round appears to have temporarily postponed the former US president's involvement.

He also mentioned the human costs of the war, saying that “5,000 young people are being killed every week” and added: “We will get through this. We will get through this.”

Trump did not give a specific date for the meeting with Putin, but emphasized: "As soon as we arrange it. I want to do it. I would actually leave here to do it - but I also want to see my beautiful grandson."
