Author who attacked writer with knife, blinding him in one eye, sentenced to 25

A New York court has sentenced 27-year-old Hadi Matar, who stabbed writer Salman Rushdie in 2022, to 25 years in prison, leaving him blind in one eye.

Rushdie was not present at his attacker's sentencing, despite being a key witness in the trial. He had previously said he thought he was going to die after Matari stabbed him more than 10 times in the head and body.

The attack occurred during a lecture Rushdie was giving at the Chautauqua Institute in New York. Before he was sentenced, Matar called Rushdie a "hypocrite."

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted murder and a further seven years for stabbing another man who was on stage with Rushdie.
