Migrant boat sinks off French coast, 1 dead, more than 60 rescued

One person has died after a boat carrying migrants sank while trying to cross the English Channel, according to French officials.

The Maritime Prefect of the Channel and North Sea said 61 people had been rescued overnight and taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer after their "overloaded boat" was wrecked.

The French rescue and intervention assistance (RIAS) tug Abeille Normandie used three speedboats to rescue 50 people, Skynews writes .

Two others were rescued by an RNLI lifeboat from Dungeness, and nine others by the British Border Force Ranger vessel - all were transferred to Abeille.

Among the survivors was a child and his mother suffering from hypothermia, who were airlifted to hospital, while others were taken to the pier in Boulogne-sur-Mer, about 19 miles (30 km) south of Calais.

There has been no update regarding their condition.

A UK government spokesman said: "We can confirm that there has been a tragic incident in the Channel involving a small boat in French waters, which has resulted in the loss of one life.

The latest figures show that the number of people crossing the Channel has continued to rise, passing the 12,000 mark last week.

The latest figures on crossings show that 1,125 people were recorded arriving in the UK by small boats in the last seven days to May 17.
