The drop in domestic prices reduces milk imports for January-April by 15%

Milk imports into Albania marked a significant decline during the first quarter of 2025, after two years of high growth rates.

According to data from Customs, during the period January-April 2025, about 5.1 million kg of milk were imported, a decrease of 15.4% compared to the same period in 2024.

The vast majority of total milk imports, according to Customs data, were carried out by food product distributors, while only one processing operator resulted as a direct importer for this period of the product as a raw material.

The decline in imports was influenced by the decrease in the price of domestic milk, compared to the selling price of imports, which was higher at the beginning of the year.

According to industry operators, the average selling price of cow's milk in the country as a raw material has dropped from 64 lek to 62 lek per liter excluding VAT, while on large farms the price continues to be higher, at around 66 lek/liter.

Compared to the imported product, operators explain that at the beginning of the year, the price of milk as a raw material from abroad was higher, reaching 67 lek/liter after including transport and taxes. According to them, this was influenced by a temporary increase in prices in European markets.

However, currently the import price has stabilized at around 64 lek per liter, and operators claim to have increased imports during the second quarter to meet seasonal demand, which usually increases in the spring-summer period. For the months of July-August, imported raw material is expected to account for 30% of the total milk used for production by processing operators.

Consumption of dairy products, according to the industry, is stable and within expectations, with a slight increase compared to the previous year, which indicates a stabilization of the market after the strong fluctuations of previous years.

Operators also claim that there has been an increase in production during the period. By 2023, the amount of milk collected nationwide was 110.1 thousand tons. Compared to 2022, the amount of milk collected has decreased by 8%./ MONITOR
