Suspected of supplying Russia with ballistic missiles, the EU warns Iran of sanctions
The European Union (EU) has condemned Iran's alleged supply of ballistic missiles to Russia, and has vowed to impose new sanctions on the Islamic republic.
In a joint communique on Friday, the 27 EU member states said the supply "is a direct threat to European security" and that it constitutes an escalation, as Iran has supplied Russia with ammunition and drones in the past.
The bloc's foreign policy and security chief, Josep Borrell, said the EU would respond quickly with new sanctions against Iran's missile and drone programs.
Iran has denied accusations from Ukraine and the West that it is supplying Russia with missiles. Tehran has denied in the past that it supplies it with combat drones.
"The EU has repeatedly warned Iran against supplying Russia with ballistic missiles," the statement said.
Iran is highly isolated politically due to its nuclear program and human rights abuses.
In recent years, the Iranian leadership has responded by strengthening relations with Russia and China.
Earlier this week, the UK, France and Germany canceled air service agreements with Tehran and vowed to sanction its airline, Iran Air.
The European trio, known as the E3, said in a statement on September 10 that it had taken action after confirming that Iran had transferred ballistic missiles to Russia.
Meanwhile, the United States imposed sanctions on 10 individuals and six entities based in Iran and Russia, including Iran Air, for allegedly supplying ballistic missiles.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said on September 10 that these accusations are "completely false and baseless". /REL/
