The International Court of Justice orders Israel to stop the offensive in Rafah

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) today ordered Israel to immediately stop its military offensive in Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip, where it sent forces in early May, writes the BBC

The order, approved by the 15-judge panel by a 13-2 vote, came a week after it was requested by South Africa as part of its case accusing Israel of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention.

" Israel must immediately stop its military offensive and any other action in the Rafah Governorate that could cause the Palestinian group in Gaza living conditions that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part ," the ICJ president said. , Nawaf Salam, reading the verdict.

The UN high court also says that the Rafah border crossing with Egypt should be opened for the entry of humanitarian aid.

South Africa had asked the ICJ to order it as an emergency measure, saying Israel's actions in Rafah constitute a "genocidal" operation and threaten the survival of the Palestinian people.
