Threats from cyber attacks in the US, Pentagon warning: We will respond

US military leaders have begun unveiling details of the Defense Department's updated cyber strategy, which calls for troops to "campaign both in and through cyberspace" to defend the country.

The Pentagon on Friday announced that it had shared a classified version of the 2023 Cyber Strategy with Congress earlier this week and promised to provide an unclassified summary of the new strategy in the coming months.

According to a Pentagon statement, the new cyber strategy updates the one released in 2018. It is based on experiences of significant cyber operations.

These operations include some 47 deployments to 22 countries by a US Cyber Command team that was most recently in Latvia.

US officials also say they have learned a lot from Russia's efforts to use cyber attacks as part of its offensive in Ukraine.

"The department will maximize its cyber capabilities to prevent cyber attacks," the Department of Defense said Friday.

Likewise, the Pentagon warned that the cyber teams of the US military " will campaign in and through cyberspace, below the level of armed conflict, to enhance deterrence efforts as well as creating problems for adversaries."

Consistent with previous statements and congressional testimony from senior Pentagon officials, the new Cyber Strategy ranks China as the top threat.

"In the event of a conflict with the US, we will almost certainly see China use aggressive cyber operations against our critical infrastructure and almost certainly be able to damage critical infrastructure," he said earlier this month. Director of the US Agency for Cybersecurity and Infrastructure, Jen Easterly.

Last week, the agency, along with the FBI, the National Security Agency and partner countries such as Australia, Britain, Canada and New Zealand, issued a warning about the cyber activity of a China-linked actor known as 'Volt'. Typhoon'.

Along with China, the Pentagon's Cyber Strategy identifies Russia, North Korea, Iran, terrorist and criminal organizations as serious threats to the country. The Pentagon says the new strategy complements the National Cyber Security Strategy for 2023, which was announced by the White House earlier this year./VOA
