Arrest warrant issued against Assad for complicity in war crimes

Two French judges issued an arrest warrant on Monday for ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for complicity in war crimes.

Judges hold Syria's former dictator responsible as "supreme commander of the armed forces" for a 2017 bombing in Deraa that killed a civilian.

This is the second arrest warrant for Bashar al-Assad, issued by French judges from the crimes against humanity division of a court in Paris.

After 13 years of civil war that left more than 500,000 dead, armed groups led by the radical Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overran Damascus on December 8 and ousted Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia. Assad's regime has been accused of crimes during the civil war.
