The new EU agreement reduces the demand for natural gas by 15%

The new EU agreement reduces the demand for natural gas by 15%

The Council of Ministers of the EU reached a political agreement today regarding the proposal to extend the voluntary objective for reducing gas demand from member countries by 15% for one year.

"The EU has not fully recovered from the energy crisis and Russia continues to use energy as a weapon. EU member states must show solidarity and prepare for the coming winter. Total gas consumption in the EU has fallen by 19.3% between August 2022 and January 2023.

The reduction in demand for natural gas has allowed us to fill our warehouses, keep prices low and secure more energy supplies,” noted Swedish Minister of Energy, Enterprise and Industry, Ebba Busch.

The new regulation sets a voluntary target for member states to reduce their natural gas consumption by 15% between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024, compared to their average consumption in the period between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2022.

Member States agreed to change the reporting rules. Member States will continue to report data on savings achieved, at least every two months, with the possibility of earlier reporting.
