Over 1,600 journalists killed in 20 years, Russia holds the first place in

Russia ranks first in Europe in terms of the number of journalists killed in the line of duty, a report by the international organization Reporters Without Borders points out.

As noted in the report, systematic attacks on press freedom in Russia have intensified since 2001, and 37 media workers, including Anna Politkovskaya, who was killed on October 7, 2006, have been victims of violence in this country.

The organization considers the war in Ukraine as one of the causes of the high number of victims among journalists in Ukraine. In the last two decades, 20 media workers have been killed, including eight since the beginning of the Russian occupation.

Iraq is the world "leader" in killing journalists.

In total, 1,657 journalists were killed worldwide in the last 20 years, who were victims of assassinations, contract killings, attacks in conflict zones or died after being seriously injured.

Iraq ranks first in terms of the number of journalists killed (300 journalists). Syria is second with 280 journalists, followed by Afghanistan, Yemen, Palestine and Somalia.

According to the organization's data, the most deaths of media workers were recorded in 2012 (143). Human rights activists attribute this to the civil war in Syria. After 2012, the number of victims of journalists began to decrease. In 2021, 51 media workers died as a result of violence.
