Moscow is gripped by frost, temperatures in Siberia drop to minus 56 degrees

Temperatures in parts of Siberia plunged to minus 56 degrees on Monday, while Russia's capital, Moscow, faced record snowfall and flight disruptions.

In the Republic of Saka, which is located in the northeast of Siberia and of which Yakutsk is a part, one of the coldest cities in the world, temperatures fell to minus 50 degrees, according to the Hydrometeorological Institute of this country.

In Oimiakon, an area in Saka, temperatures dropped to minus 56 degrees on Monday night.

Russian meteorologists said it will be more like minus 60 degrees in Oimiakon, given the wind and humidity, and that temperatures will drop further overnight.

"In the European part of Russia, in the Siberian and Ural territories, the frost is expected to intensify in the first weeks of December," said the National Hydrometeorological Institute of Russia.

Almost all of Saka lies beneath the frozen surface of the earth. In the region's capital, Yakutsk, which lies about 5,000 kilometers east of Moscow, temperatures were around minus 44 to minus 47 degrees.

Temperatures of minus 50 degrees have become less common in recent years due to climate change.
