Writer Salman Rushdie, who suffered years of death threats from Iran after writing The Satanic Verses, has been stabbed to death on stage in New York.

The Booker Prize winner was giving a speech at the Chautauqua Institute when he was stabbed at least 15 times, the Daily Mail reports .

The New York police announced that a man had climbed onto the stage and shot Rushdie. The author risks losing one of his eyes. Doctors have claimed that the nerves in his arm were cut and the liver was damaged by the knife.

Police arrested a suspect identified as Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey. No motive or charges have yet been confirmed by police.
