Strong Explosion at a Refinery in Istanbul, 12 Injured A strong explosion occurred this Tuesday at a refinery in Istanbul, Turkey, leaving 12 people injured. International media reports that the explosion was so powerful that it was felt in a wide area around the refinery.
The Tupras company announced that the incident happened around 13:30, during maintenance work on a compressor, when a fire broke out.
"According to the first reports, 12 of our employees received minor injuries and were sent to the hospital for medical examination. The fire has been brought under control and operations in the rest of the refinery are continuing as normal," the company said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the head of Kocaeli province, Tahir Buyukakin, announced that the explosion may have been caused by an unexpected malfunction during an emergency preparedness exercise.
