The new EU-China relations strategy, Charles Michel visit to Beijing
European Council President Charles Michel will travel to China next week to meet with the country's leadership in an effort to understand where China stands on key issues at "this critical juncture."
Michel will visit Beijing on December 1 and meet with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Kepiang and National People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Li Zhanshu.
The meeting comes weeks after the 27 leaders of the European Union held a three-hour strategic discussion on China, which refused to condemn Russia's aggression against Ukraine. They also discussed trade relations between the bloc and Beijing.
Other concerns include the security implications of Chinese investment in the bloc's critical infrastructure, China's assertiveness in the region, and in particular its rhetoric on Taiwan, and Xi's re-election to an unprecedented third term.
The two will discuss geopolitical developments, the economy and trade ties, and other global challenges, including climate change, health, and rising food and energy prices.
